Basu Chatterjee (Bengali: বাসু চ্যাটার্জ্জী; born January 10, 1927 – died June 4, 2020) was a famous Indian film director and writer. He made many movies and TV shows.

During the 1970s and 1980s, he became known for making "middle cinema" films. These movies were different from big action films. They told simple, heartwarming stories about everyday middle-class families. His films often explored relationships and life in cities.

Some of his most popular films include Chhoti Si Baat (1975), Chitchor (1976), Rajnigandha (1974), and Baton Baton Mein (1979). He also directed the Bengali film Hothath Brishti (1998), which had actors from both Bangladesh and India.

Early Life

Basu Chatterjee was born in Ajmer, Rajasthan, India. He grew up in a middle-class family. This background helped him create movies that showed real-life situations. His films were very different from the big, glamorous movies of his time.

Career in Films and TV

In the 1950s, Chatterjee moved to Bombay (now Mumbai). He started his career as an illustrator and cartoonist for a newspaper called Blitz. He worked there for 18 years.

Later, he decided to try filmmaking. He helped another director, Basu Bhattacharya, with the film Teesri Kasam (1966). This film even won a big award!

Basu Chatterjee directed his first film, Sara Akash, in 1969. He won an award for the best screenplay for this movie.

He was known for making films that were light-hearted and easy to watch. They often focused on love stories and family life. Some of his well-known films are Piya Ka Ghar (1971), Us Paar (1974), Swami (1977), and Shaukeen (1982). His last successful film was Chameli Ki Shaadi (1986).

Besides movies, Chatterjee also directed popular TV series for Doordarshan. These include the detective show Byomkesh Bakshi and the drama series Rajani.

He was also part of the jury at the 10th Moscow International Film Festival in 1977. This shows how respected he was in the film world.
