The Batchawana River is a river in Ontario, Canada. It flows through the Algoma and Sudbury areas. This river eventually flows into Batchawana Bay, which is part of Lake Superior. Lake Superior is one of the Great Lakes. The river's mouth is located north of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.
The name "Batchawana" comes from the Ojibwe language. It means "turbulent waters." This name describes how the river's water can sometimes be rough or fast-moving.

History and Fun Facts
Trading Posts and Pancakes
Long ago, in the 1800s, the Hudson's Bay Company set up a trading post near Batchawana Bay. This company was very important for the fur trade in Canada. People would trade animal furs for goods.
North of Batchawana Bay, there is a place called Pancake Bay. It has a funny name! Fur traders used to travel long distances. When they reached this bay, they sometimes only had enough flour left to make pancakes for their meal. That's how the bay got its name!
Parks and Crossings
The Batchawana River is part of a protected area. This area is called Batchawana River Provincial Park. It helps keep parts of the river and its surroundings safe.
Near the river's mouth, you'll find Batchawana Bay Provincial Park. This park is famous for its big, sandy beach. It's a great spot for swimming and relaxing.
The Algoma Central Railway also crosses the Batchawana River. This railway line passes through a small community called Batchewana.
