Bateyes is a small area, called a barrio, located in the municipality of Mayagüez, Puerto Rico. In 2010, about 1,156 people lived there. It's a part of the beautiful island of Puerto Rico, which is a commonwealth of the United States.
History of Bateyes
Puerto Rico used to be controlled by Spain. After the Spanish–American War in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened because of a special agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898.
After this, Puerto Rico became an "unincorporated territory" of the United States. This means it is a territory of the U.S. but not a state. Its people are U.S. citizens.
In 1899, the United States Department of War did a count of all the people in Puerto Rico, like a census. They found that 1,019 people lived in Bateyes barrio at that time. The population of Bateyes has changed over the years, as you can see in the chart below.
