What is Battlefield?
Battlefield is a lively district in Glasgow, known for its history and interesting buildings. It's a place where old meets new, with historic landmarks standing alongside modern facilities. It's a great spot to learn about Scottish history and see how a community grows.
A Place with History
The name "Battlefield" comes from the Battle of Langside, which happened way back in 1568. In this battle, the army of Mary, Queen of Scots was defeated. They were fighting against forces loyal to her young son, James VI. This battle was a major turning point in Scottish history.
Remembering the Battle
Today, you can see a special monument in Battlefield that remembers this historic battle. It's a really fancy monument, designed by Alexander Skirving in 1887. It stands right next to Queen's Park and was built to mark 320 years since Mary's defeat.

Most of the homes in Battlefield are older buildings. You'll find many three and four-storey tenements. These are large apartment buildings built during the Victorian and Edwardian eras. There are also some beautiful townhouses from the same time. You can also find some newer, modern homes mixed in.

- The Church on the Hill: This building was once the Langside Hill Church. It has also been transformed into a restaurant, keeping its unique look.
- Langside Library: Located at the corner of Sinclair Drive and Battlefield Road, this library is special. It's the very last Carnegie library to be built in Glasgow. Andrew Carnegie was a famous businessman who funded many libraries around the world.
Fun Events in the Area
Every May, the Southside Festival takes place in Queen's Park. This festival is a big celebration of the different cultures and unique spirit of Glasgow's Southside area. It's a great time for everyone to come together and enjoy music, food, and fun activities.
