Batton Lash (born October 29, 1953 – died January 12, 2019) was an American comic book creator. He became well-known in the 1990s when many creators started publishing their own comics.
He is most famous for his series Wolff and Byrd, Counselors of the Macabre. This was a funny series about two lawyers. They specialized in cases involving characters from horror stories. The series appeared as a comic strip in The National Law Journal. It also became a series of comic books and graphic novels. Batton Lash won several awards for his work. These included an Inkpot Award and an Eisner Award.
Becoming a Comic Creator
Batton Lash was born Vito Marangi in Brooklyn, New York. He studied cartooning and graphic arts. He went to the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan.
In 1979, he started writing and drawing Wolff and Byrd, Counselors of the Macabre. This was a weekly newspaper comic strip. It appeared in The Brooklyn Paper until 1996. It was also in The National Law Journal from 1983 to 1997. In 1980, Lash worked as a courtroom sketch artist. He drew pictures during the trial against John Gotti.
In 1994, Batton Lash and his wife Jackie Estrada started their own company. It was called Exhibit A Press. They used it to publish the Wolff and Byrd series. They made it into full-length comic book stories. They also changed its name to Supernatural Law. Later, you could read it as a digital comic on apps.
Other Famous Works
In 1994, Batton Lash wrote Archie Meets the Punisher. This was a popular crossover comic. It brought together the teen characters from Archie Comics with Marvel Comics' hero, the Punisher.
He also wrote eight issues of Radioactive Man. These comics were for Bongo Comics. In 2002, this series won an Eisner Award for Best Humor Publication. This award is a big deal in the comic book world.

Later Life and Passing
Batton Lash passed away at his home on January 12, 2019. He was 65 years old. He died from brain cancer.
