José Carlos Bauer (born November 21, 1925 – died February 4, 2007) was a famous Brazilian football player and manager. He was often called just Bauer. He was known as one of the best defensive midfielders of his time.

Early Life and Background
Bauer was born in São Paulo, Brazil. His father was from Switzerland, and his mother was African-Brazilian. From a young age, he showed great talent in football. He became a strong and important player in the middle of the field.
Playing Career Highlights
Bauer played for several top football clubs in Brazil. He spent most of his playing career with São Paulo. He also played for Botafogo for a short time.
Club Success
During his time with São Paulo, Bauer helped his team win many important titles. He won the Campeonato Paulista, which is the São Paulo State Championship, six times! These wins happened in 1945, 1946, 1948, 1949, and 1953.
International Matches
Bauer also played for the Brazil national football team. He played 29 matches for his country. He was part of the Brazilian team that won the Copa América in 1949.
He also played in two FIFA World Cup tournaments:
- The 1950 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. Brazil reached the final but finished as runner-up.
- The 1954 FIFA World Cup in Switzerland. One of his last matches in this tournament was a famous game known as the "Battle of Berne."
Life After Playing
After he stopped playing football, Bauer became a manager. He coached several teams, including Ferroviária de Araraquara.
Discovering a Star
Bauer is famous for discovering a very talented young player named Eusébio. While on a trip to Mozambique with Ferroviária, Bauer saw Eusébio play. He was so impressed that he suggested Eusébio to his old club, São Paulo. However, São Paulo did not sign him.
Then, Bauer spoke to his former coach, Béla Guttmann. Guttmann was coaching Benfica in Portugal at the time. Guttmann listened to Bauer's advice and brought Eusébio to Benfica. Eusébio went on to become one of the greatest football players in history!

José Carlos Bauer passed away on February 4, 2007, in São Paulo, Brazil.
