Bayble (called Pabail in Scottish Gaelic) is a small village. It is located on the Isle of Lewis in Scotland. This island is part of the Outer Hebrides. Bayble is about 6 miles (10 km) east of Stornoway. It is also part of the Stornoway area.
Exploring Bayble Village
Bayble is home to around 400 people. The village is split into two main parts. These are called Upper Bayble and Lower Bayble. A small stream, known as a burn, runs through the valley. This burn separates the two areas.
Upper Bayble
Upper Bayble is known as Pabail Uarach in Gaelic. This part of the village once had a local shop. It was called Murdo's. The shop served the community for 44 years before it closed.
Upper Bayble is also famous for its writers. Three well-known authors came from this area. They are Iain Crichton Smith, Derick Thomson, and Anne Frater. Iain Crichton Smith wrote mostly in English. Derick Thomson and Anne Frater wrote almost entirely in Scottish Gaelic. They are all important figures in Scottish literature.
Lower Bayble
Lower Bayble is called Pabail Iarach in Gaelic. This part of the village is right by the sea. It is a crofting township. A croft is a small farm, often with shared land. People in crofting townships often farm and fish.
The village looks out over Bayble Bay. This bay is known as Bàgh Phabail. There are two small islands in the bay. Bayble Island (Eilean Phabail) is at the south end. Eilean a' Chàise is located to the north. These islands add to the beautiful coastal scenery.
