Lake Fenton is a special kind of community called a census-designated place (CDP). It is located in Fenton Charter Township, which is part of Genesee County in the state of Michigan, USA.

In 2010, about 5,559 people lived here. This number grew from 4,876 people in 2000. Lake Fenton also includes two smaller, unincorporated communities called Bayport Park and Lakeside.

The Lake Fenton Community Schools district serves this area and some nearby places. Both the school district and the community get their name from Lake Fenton, which used to be called Long Lake.

In 1840, a community named "Mount Pleasant" was planned by John Cook. Its name changed to "Long Lake" in 1850. A post office opened there on March 6, 1851. Later, the lake was renamed "Lake Fenton," and the original planned community disappeared. In 1932, the United States Board on Geographic Names officially decided on "Lake Fenton" as the name for the lake.

Lake Fenton is home to a few smaller communities.

Lakeside Community

  • Lakeside is a community on the east side of Lake Fenton. It is a short distance north of Fenton. You can find it at coordinates 42°50′09″N 83°42′24″W / 42.83583°N 83.70667°W / 42.83583; -83.70667 (Lakeside).

Bayport Park Community

  • Bayport Park is another community. It is located on the north side of Lake Fenton. Its coordinates are 42°51′15″N 83°43′04″W / 42.85417°N 83.71778°W / 42.85417; -83.71778 (Bayport Park). The elevation here is about 889 feet (271 meters) above sea level.

Geography of Lake Fenton

The Lake Fenton CDP is in the northeast part of Fenton Township. It shares borders with Mundy Township to the north and the rest of Fenton Township to the west. To the south is the city of Fenton, and to the east is Holly Township in Oakland County.

Most of Lake Fenton, the body of water, is inside the Lake Fenton CDP. Only the very southern part of the lake is in the city of Fenton. Other lakes in this area include Petts Lake, Crooked Lake, McCully Lake, Dollar Lake, Little Long Lake, and Barnum Lake.

The total area of the CDP is about 7.2 square miles (18.6 square kilometers). About 5.5 square miles (14.3 square kilometers) of this is land, and 1.7 square miles (4.4 square kilometers) is water. This means about 23.51% of the area is water.

From the center of Lake Fenton CDP, it is about 3.5 miles (5.6 kilometers) south to the center of Fenton city. It is also about 12 miles (19 kilometers) north to downtown Flint if you take Fenton Road.

In 2000, there were 4,876 people living in Lake Fenton. There were 1,886 households, and 1,433 of these were families. The population density was about 884 people per square mile (341 people per square kilometer).

Most people living in Lake Fenton in 2000 were White (97.09%). A smaller number of people were Black or African American (0.25%), Native American (0.45%), or Asian (0.66%). About 1.27% of people were from two or more races. About 1.39% of the population was Hispanic or Latino.

About 31.2% of households had children under 18 living with them. Most households (64.8%) were married couples. About 7.2% of households had a female head with no husband present.

The average household had 2.58 people, and the average family had 2.97 people. The population was spread out by age:

  • 23.6% were under 18 years old.
  • 7.1% were from 18 to 24 years old.
  • 29.0% were from 25 to 44 years old.
  • 29.2% were from 45 to 64 years old.
  • 11.1% were 65 years or older.
