Communities in Mundy Township
Mundy Township is home to two main communities. These are places where people live and work, but they aren't officially separate cities or towns.
Rankin: The Township Center
- Rankin was first known as Mundy Centre. It's located near U.S. Highway 23, a major road. You can find it just west of an exit on Grand Blanc Road, east of Jennings Road. The main offices for Mundy Township are here. Rankin Elementary School is also in this area. The city of Grand Blanc is a few miles to the east.
Mundy: A Historic Spot
- Mundy is another community found in the southwest part of the township. It's located where Linden and Baldwin Roads meet. This spot was once home to the Mundy Post Office, which played an important role in connecting the community.
History of Mundy Township
Mundy Township has a long and interesting history, going back almost 200 years!
Early Days and First Settlers
In 1833, people started buying land in the area that would become Mundy Township. By 1837, all the land in section 13 was bought. The very first settlers, Jason L. Austin, Daniel Williams, and Eli Gilbert, made their homes in section 13. At first, Mundy Township was part of a larger area called Grand Blanc Township, which was formed in March 1833.
Becoming Its Own Township
Mundy Township officially became its own separate area on March 11, 1837. It was named after Edward Mundy, who was the lieutenant governor at the time. When it was first created, it even included the area that is now Gaines Township.
The first meeting for the new township happened on April 3, 1837, at Josiah Alger's house. Only 18 people voted at that first meeting! By November 1840, the number of voters had grown to 38. On March 9, 1842, Gaines Township officially separated from Mundy.
Old Settlements and Post Offices
In the southern part of the township, near what is now Lake Fenton, a settlement called Podunk started around Baldwin Road. Morgan Baldwin and George Judson were among the first to settle there.
Post offices were important for communication back then. A post office opened in Mundy Township on May 1, 1848. It moved a couple of times but returned to Mundy in 1852. Another post office, called Elgin, opened in 1855 but closed in 1871. The original Mundy Post Office finally closed on December 31, 1900.
Modern Changes and Police Services
In 2014, Mundy Township's supervisor, David L. Guigear, explored ways to work with nearby areas like Swartz Creek City and Gaines Township. They discussed sharing services like building departments and police. Gaines Township decided not to merge their police department with Mundy's.
However, on January 9, 2016, the Swartz Creek City Council voted to combine their police department with Mundy Township's. This created a new, larger police force called the Metro Police Authority of Genesee County, which started on February 1, 2016.
