History of Fenton
Fenton was first settled in 1834. It was first called "Dibbleville" after Clark Dibble, an early settler. In 1837, William M. Fenton planned the town and named it "Fentonville." He later became Michigan's lieutenant governor.
When the settlement became a village in 1863, its name changed to Fenton. The post office used the name Fentonville until 1886, then switched to Fenton.
In the 1970s, the city updated its downtown area. On August 24, 2007, a strong tornado hit Fenton. It damaged homes and a school. Many people lost power, and the city declared a state of emergency. Luckily, no one was seriously hurt. In 2011, plans were announced to rebuild the old downtown area.
By the 2010 census, Fenton had 11,756 people. The city and Fenton Township are separate. Fenton has several historic buildings, including the A.J. Phillips Fenton Museum. It was also home to Michigan's first aviation school.
