Bayville's Story: A Look at Its History

Bayville became an official village in 1919. This was part of a bigger movement where many large estate owners on Long Island wanted more control over their areas.

Early Days: From Matinecock to Oak Neck

Like many other places on Long Island, the Matinecock Indians lived here first. They called the area Oak Neck and Pine Island. In 1658, a person from Oyster Bay named Daniel Whitehead bought the land from the tribes. By 1745, the land was divided among 23 men. They mostly grew asparagus. In 1859, Oak Neck got a new name: Bayville. The first Methodist church was built west of what is now Merritt Lane.

Growth and Changes in Bayville

Many large estates were built in the areas around Bayville. In 1898, a special bridge called a drawbridge was built. This bridge connected Bayville to Mill Neck.

In 1909, the Bayville Casino opened. It was a popular spot that attracted many people who loved the beach. In 1919, Winslow S. Pierce, who owned the Dunstable Estate in town, became the first mayor of the Village of Bayville. His estate was later sold to Harrison Williams and renamed "Oak Point."

When the Arlington Hotel, Bayville Casino, and Ritzmore Estate all burned down, it led to the creation of the Bayville Fire Department. After World War II, the community started to grow quickly. A new church, post office, and school were built within three years. From 1950 to 1960, the number of people living in Bayville doubled!

The Bayville Bridge: A Local Landmark

The Bayville Bridge is one of two ways to enter the village. It opened in 1938 and is a big landmark and a place many tourists visit. This bridge is actually the fourth bridge built in that exact spot.

In 2019, the village celebrated its 100th birthday!
