The Beatty Saugeen River is a cool river in Ontario, Canada. It's part of the bigger Saugeen River system, which eventually flows into Lake Huron. This river is found in Grey County, in the southwestern part of Ontario. It's like a smaller stream that joins up with the South Saugeen River.

Where the River Flows

The Beatty Saugeen River starts in a forest area. This is about 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) southeast of a place called Boothville. It's located in the township of Southgate.

From its start, the river flows west. It passes north of the community of Dromore. Then, it turns southwest, going north of Yeovil.

The river continues west, flowing over the Holstein Dam in Holstein. It also goes under Ontario Highway 6 near Orchardville.

Finally, the Beatty Saugeen turns northwest. It flows south of Hampden in the township of West Grey. The river then reaches its end, joining the South Saugeen River in the town of Hanover.

River Size and Slope

The Beatty Saugeen River is about 46 kilometers (29 miles) long. Its drainage basin, which is the area of land where all the water flows into the river, is 274 square kilometers (106 square miles).

The river has an average slope of 4.5 meters per kilometer (23.8 feet per mile). This means it drops about 4.5 meters for every kilometer it flows.

River's Land Features

The area where the river begins is called the Dundalk Till plain. A "till plain" is a flat or gently rolling area made of soil and rocks left behind by glaciers.

The rest of the river flows through the Horseshoe Moraine and the Teeswater Drumlin field. A "moraine" is a hill or ridge made of rocks and dirt pushed by glaciers. A "drumlin field" is an area with many small, oval-shaped hills also formed by glaciers.

Plants and Animals

Scientists keep an eye on the Beatty Saugeen River to check its health. There are four special places in the river's area where they do this.

  • Two stations check for tiny animals that live at the bottom of the river. These are called benthic animals.
  • One station checks the quality of the surface water.
  • Another station checks both the water quality and the benthic animals.

The river is home to two rare species. One is a type of dragonfly called the Delta-spotted spiketail. The other is a special plant called the Hart's Tongue Fern. It's important to protect these rare species and their home.
