About Beinn Mheadhoin
Beinn Mheadhoin is a mountain with several ridges and a really nice top, or "summit." It's known for its interesting shape and the views you might get from its higher points. The mountain is part of the larger Northwest Highlands range, which is famous for its wild and rugged landscapes.
Where is it?
This mountain is found in a part of Scotland called Morvern. Morvern is a peninsula, which means it's land almost surrounded by water. It's known for its stunning scenery, including lochs (lakes), forests, and, of course, mountains. Beinn Mheadhoin is also quite close to a small place called Glensanda.
What is a Graham or Marilyn?
You might see Beinn Mheadhoin described as a "Graham" and a "Marilyn." These are special ways that people classify mountains in the UK.
- A Graham is a mountain in Scotland that is between 600 and 762 meters (about 2,000 to 2,500 feet) high. It must also have a "prominence" of at least 150 meters. Prominence means how much a mountain rises above the land around it.
- A Marilyn is a hill or mountain in the UK, Ireland, or the Isle of Man that has a prominence of at least 150 meters. So, Beinn Mheadhoin is tall enough and stands out enough to be both!
The Glensanda Quarry
One interesting thing about Beinn Mheadhoin is that a very large granite quarry is located on its southern side. A quarry is a place where rocks, like granite, are dug out of the ground. These rocks are then used for building materials, like roads or buildings. The Glensanda quarry is one of the biggest in Europe. It's so big that the granite is usually taken away by ship from a special pier.
