Belgian franc facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Belgian franc was the official money used in Belgium for many years. It was very similar to the Luxembourg franc, which was used in the neighboring country, Luxembourg. The Belgian franc started being used in 1848. You could recognize it by its symbols, "fr." or "F."

On January 1, 1999, the Belgian franc was replaced by the euro (€). This new money is now used across many European countries. If you wanted to know its value, one euro was worth about 40 Belgian francs.

What Coins Were Used?

The Belgian franc system included several types of coins. The most common values were 1, 5, 20, and 50 francs. There was also a 50-cent coin, but it was not used as often as the franc coins.
