Bell City is a small city in the northeastern part of Stoddard County, Missouri, United States. It was started around 1900 as a town where people cut down trees and made lumber (a sawmill town). Bell City is located at the bottom of Crowley's Ridge and can be reached by Missouri Route 91. In 2020, about 464 people lived there. The current mayor is Dorothy Burton.
Bell City's Story
Bell City got its name from two brothers, Gesper Albert and Ralford Stephen Bell. They owned a sawmill in the area. A post office has been open in Bell City since 1890. The town was also located along the St. Louis Southwestern Railway, which helped it grow.
Where is Bell City?
Bell City is on the western edge of a flat, low area in southeast Missouri. Another city called Sikeston is about 15 miles to the southeast. The beginning of Little River is three miles to the east. Missouri Route 91 goes through Bell City. This road connects to U.S. Route 61 at Morley, which is ten miles east.
The United States Census Bureau says that Bell City covers about 0.55 square miles (1.44 square kilometers) of land. There is no significant water area within the city limits.
