Bellamy Cay is a small island in the British Virgin Islands. It's located inside a bay called Trellis Bay, which is part of Beef Island. This island used to be known as Blanco Islet. It got its current name from a famous pirate, "Black Sam" Bellamy, who was known as the "prince of pirates."
Bellamy Cay: A Pirate's Hideout
For a short but very successful time in 1716 and 1717, Black Sam Bellamy used this small island as his main base. His crew would keep their ships safe in Trellis Bay. Bellamy quickly learned that from Blanco Islet, and a nearby spot called Sprat Point, he could easily see ships sailing through the Sir Francis Drake Channel. He especially liked to target Spanish ships that were carrying valuable treasure for the King and Queen of Spain.
From Sailor to Island Owner
In the early 1950s, a man named Władysław (Wladek) Wagner bought the island. He was famous for being the first Polish sailor to sail all the way around the world. After his long journey, he settled in Trellis Bay. He built a boatyard and a special ramp for boats on Beef Island. He also built most of the buildings you see on Bellamy Cay today, where he ran a small restaurant and hotel.
The Last Resort Today
Since the 1970s, Bellamy Cay has been home to a popular restaurant and bar called "The Last Resort." For many years, a British war hero named Tony Snell owned and ran this place.
Bellamy Cay is very close to the Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport. The owners and staff of "The Last Resort" live on the island. The island is special because it's not connected to the main power, water, or communication lines from the mainland. Instead, it makes its own electricity and fresh water using solar power, wind power, and Diesel generators.
