Belle and Sebastian (名犬ジョリィ, Meiken Jorī, Jolie the famous dog) is a popular anime TV show. It's based on the 1965 book Belle et Sébastien by French writer Cécile Aubry. The show first aired in Japan on the NHK network from April 7, 1981, to June 22, 1982.
There are 52 episodes in total. The show was made by MK Company, Visual 80 Productions, and Toho Company, Ltd.. Toshiyuki Kashiwakura was the main writer. Shuichi Seki designed the characters.
Belle and Sebastian was shown in France and Japan in 1981. The American TV channel Nickelodeon started showing it in 1984. In the United Kingdom, it aired on Children's BBC in 1989 and 1990.
Many people who worked on this anime also worked on Nippon Animation's World Masterpiece Theater shows. Because of this, Belle and Sebastian feels similar to those series.
The show has been shown in many countries outside Japan. It has been dubbed (voices changed to another language) and subtitled (words shown on screen) into English and many other languages. Eileen Opatut wrote the English script. Synchro-Quebec in Montreal did the English voice acting.

Story of Belle and Sebastian
The series follows the exciting adventures of a young boy named Sebastian. He lives in a small village in Southern France, high up in the mountains. Sebastian has no friends because other kids tease him. They make fun of him for not having a mother.
One day, Sebastian meets a kind white dog. This dog is a Pyrenean Mountain Dog. People have wrongly accused her of attacking others. Sebastian names her Belle, and they quickly become best friends.
To save Belle from being put down, Sebastian leaves his adoptive family. He runs away to Spain with Belle and his tiny dog, Poochie. They have many adventures. They try to avoid the police while searching for Sebastian's long-lost mother.
Main Characters
Sebastian
Sebastian is a 9-year-old boy. He lives in a French village near the mountains. He was born on St. Sebastian's day, which is how he got his name. Since he was a baby, he has lived with his adoptive grandfather, Cecil. He also lives with Anne-Marie, Cecil's real granddaughter.
Sebastian is kind and full of energy. However, the other children tease him because he doesn't have a real mother. Sebastian really wants to find his mother. He also longs to have a true friend.
Belle
Belle is a very large white Pyrenean Mountain Dog. Her name in the Japanese version is "Jolie." She ran away into the French countryside. Belle is gentle and warm-hearted. But when she tries to help people, they often misunderstand her actions.
Because of these misunderstandings, people call her "The White Monster." The police are always trying to catch her.
Poochie
Poochie is a small puppy. He often rides around in Sebastian's pocket. Poochie barks a lot and sometimes gets into trouble. But he is a loyal friend to both Sebastian and Belle.
Cecil
Cecil took Sebastian in when he was a baby. He acts as Sebastian's adoptive grandfather. Cecil is a loving guide. He teaches Sebastian everything he knows about the mountains and the wild.
Anne-Marie
Anne-Marie is Cecil's biological granddaughter. She has helped take care of Sebastian since he was born. She sees herself as his mother, even though she's more like an older sister. She cares for him deeply. However, she can sometimes be too protective and a bit strict.
Paul
Paul is Anne-Marie's older brother. He is a soldier in the mountain army.
Isabel
Isabel is Sebastian's real mother. She is a traveling Romani woman. She went against her people's traditions by marrying someone from outside their group. Her husband died before Sebastian was born. She secretly had Sebastian in the mountains. She promised to come back for him when her people could understand her choices.
Sarah
Sarah is a sick and lonely little girl. Sebastian meets her in Spain during his journey. Both Sebastian and Sarah want friends their own age. They quickly become close. We learn that Sarah celebrates her 9th birthday during the series.
Sarah's father is very rich and gives her everything she wants. But the only thing that truly makes Sarah happy is having a good friend. She helps Sebastian many times during his journey. It is suggested that Sebastian and Sarah grow up and marry, with Belle still by their side.
Dr. Phillips
Dr. Phillips is a local doctor in Sebastian's village. He is also Anne-Marie's boyfriend.
Mr. Albert
Mr. Albert is Sarah's father. He is a rich man and well-respected. He doesn't like dogs at first. But he slowly starts to like Belle and Poochie after they help Sarah get better. His love for his daughter makes him willing to help Sebastian and Belle. We later find out he has admired Isabel for a long time. He even sent her red roses in Barcelona. It is hinted that he and Isabel might start a relationship.
Robert and Maria
Robert and Maria are servants in Mr. Albert's home. Robert is the butler and sometimes drives. Maria is the housekeeper. They seem to like each other but don't want to admit it.
The Carlos Company
The Carlos Company is a group of gypsies. Sebastian's mother, Isabel, travels with them. Isabel is their main performer because she is beautiful and sings wonderfully. She also makes and fixes the company's costumes. She even makes Anne-Marie a wedding dress.
Hernandez and Fernandez
Hernandez and Fernandez are two bad guys who keep showing up. They try to catch Belle to become famous, rich, and popular.
Oscar
Oscar is a traveling performer. He shows his strength by breaking chains wrapped around his body. Johnny is Oscar's son and also a performer. Johnny is good at balance and agility, not strength. They used to be part of the Carlos Company. Oscar still cares for Isabel and has her photo in his trunk. He doesn't want to give it away at first because it's very special to him.
Inspector Garcia
Inspector Garcia is a Spanish police officer. He is always chasing Belle and Sebastian. He is a bit heavy-set and has a thin mustache.
Officer Martin
Officer Martin is Inspector Garcia's helper. He is a very clumsy man.
Costello
Costello is the head of the Spanish Border Guards. He looks a lot like Fidel Castro.
