Many belts are made from leather that comes from cows. The best quality cowhide leather is called full-grain leather. It lasts a very long time, even if you wear it every day. Another soft and smooth leather is calfskin, which also makes a really nice belt.

But belts aren't just made from leather! You can find them in many other materials too. Some are made from braided leather, or leather with cool designs carved into it. Others might be made from soft suede, canvas, strong webbing, or even rope. There are lots of choices!

Belts used to be mostly for holding up clothes. But today, they are also a big part of fashion! Belts can add a lot to your outfit. There are some unwritten rules about belts, especially for men wearing suits. For women, belt choices often follow the latest fashion trends.

Formal Belts

When you dress up for a special event, like wearing dress pants, your belt should look a certain way. Formal belts are usually thinner, about 28–32 mm wide (a little over 1 inch). They often have special details like smooth edges and fine stitching.

If a formal belt is made of leather, it usually has a shiny finish and a smooth back. The buckle is often made of polished metal. A good rule for formal wear is to match your belt's leather color to your shoes. Also, try to match the metal of your belt buckle to other metal accessories you wear, like a watch.

Casual Belts

Casual belts are what you wear with everyday clothes, like denim jeans. These belts are usually wider, about 35–42 mm wide (a little under 11⁄2 inch).

Casual belts are often made from one piece of leather that might have a rougher or textured look. Their buckles often have an old or "antiqued" finish. They might also have wider or thicker stitching to make them extra strong and durable for daily wear.
