Benjamin McGee Jr. (born January 26, 1939) is an American former professional football player and college coach. He played as a defensive end for nine seasons in the National Football League (NFL). All his NFL playing time was with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Before joining the pros, McGee played college football at Jackson State University. After his time as a player, he became a college football coach. He even served as the head coach for the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff for four seasons.
Playing Professional Football
Benjamin McGee Jr. was a talented football player. He played in the National Football League (NFL) for nine years. All of his professional career was spent with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
McGee played as a defensive end. This position is part of the defensive line. Their job is to stop the opposing team's offense. They try to tackle the quarterback or stop running plays.
During his time with the Steelers, McGee was recognized for his skills. He was chosen to play in the Pro Bowl twice. This is a special game where the best players from the NFL compete. He was selected in 1966 and again in 1968.
His strong play helped the Steelers defense. He was also named to the Pittsburgh Steelers Legends team. This honor shows he was one of the team's important players.
Coaching College Teams
After his successful playing career, Benjamin McGee Jr. became a football coach. He started as an assistant coach at several colleges. These included his old school, Jackson State University.
He also coached at Arkansas–Pine Bluff and Mississippi Valley State. These roles helped him gain experience. He learned how to lead a team and develop players.
Later, McGee became the head coach at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. He led the Golden Lions team for four seasons. This was from 1980 to 1983. During his time as head coach, his team had a record of 17 wins, 22 losses, and 4 ties.
