Bena (pronounced BEE-nuh) is a small city in Cass County, Minnesota, United States. In 2020, about 143 people lived there. Bena is part of the larger Brainerd area.
History of Bena
The name Bena comes from the Ojibwe word bina, which means "partridge." Partridges are common birds in this part of Minnesota. The first post office in Bena opened in 1898.
Two well-known places near Bena are the Big Fish Supper Club and the Big Winnie General Store. The Big Winnie General Store is even listed on the National Register of Historic Places because it's an important historical building.
From 1901 to 1911, a special school called the Bena Boarding School operated in the city. This school was for Native American students.
During World War II, there was a logging camp near Bena. This camp was staffed by prisoners of war. These prisoners helped with logging work during the war.
