About Rawalpindi International Airport
Rawalpindi International Airport was one of Pakistan's largest airports. It played a key role in connecting Pakistan with the rest of the world. Even though it was called "Rawalpindi International Airport," it was actually closer to Islamabad, the capital city.
Its Location and Role
The airport was built in the Chaklala area, which is part of Rawalpindi. Because it was so close to Islamabad, it became the main airport for the capital. This made it a busy place for international flights. Many government officials and visitors from other countries used this airport.
Sharing with the Air Force
A unique feature of this airport was that it shared its facilities with the Pakistan Air Force. Air Force planes used the same runways for their transport and communication flights. This made the airport a shared space for both civilian and military aviation.
The New Airport
After many years of service, Rawalpindi International Airport was replaced. A new, modern airport called Islamabad International Airport was built. It opened in May 2018. The new airport is much larger and has more advanced facilities. It now handles all the flights that used to go to Rawalpindi International Airport.
