Benjamin Griffin Barney was an American soldier who became a Brevet Brigadier General during the American Civil War. He led the 2nd Pennsylvania Provisional Heavy Artillery. He was especially known for his actions during the Second Battle of Petersburg.
Life as a Soldier
Benjamin Griffin Barney was born in Massachusetts. Before the Civil War started, he moved to Philadelphia and worked as a merchant.
When the war began, Barney joined the army. On September 11, 1862, he enlisted in the 9th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment. He quickly became a captain in Company B of that regiment. By November 1862, he was made a captain in Battery B of the 2nd Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery.
In April 1864, Barney was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel. He was then moved to the new 2nd Pennsylvania Provisional Heavy Artillery. This unit was formed to include extra soldiers from the 2nd Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery.
During the Second Battle of Petersburg, a major battle in the war, his commander, Elisha Marshall, was injured. Barney bravely stepped up to take his place. He became the leader of the 2nd Brigade, 1st Division, IX Corps.
Later, Barney and his unit were part of the first attack line at the Battle of the Crater. This was another very tough battle. Barney was badly wounded during the fighting. Because of his injuries, he was discharged from the army on November 11, 1864. He was then taken to a hospital in Georgetown, D.C..
For his brave service during the Second Battle of Petersburg, Benjamin Barney received a special honor. On March 13, 1865, he was given the title of Brevet Brigadier General. This means he was recognized for his courage and leadership.
