History of Schools in Benson
Education has always been important in Benson. The first school buildings were simple log cabins. They had only one room and taught basic subjects. These early schools were temporary. They were later replaced by stronger buildings.
Early Brick School Houses
In 1894, a brick school house was built in eastern Benson. It was called the Riverside School. This school had two classrooms. Each room taught three different grade levels. In 1896, a teacher named Mary Griffith earned $30 a month at Riverside School.
Another brick school was built in 1897 in western Benson. This school was located on a hill overlooking the Bear River. When it first opened, it taught students from first to eighth grade in two rooms. Later, as more children enrolled, it taught only grades one through six. This building is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is known as the Benson Elementary School.
Changes in Education
After these brick schools were built, church services were sometimes held in them. These two schools served the community's educational needs for the first six grades until 1935. That year, a new, more modern school was built.
This new school was used for about 30 years. However, in 1968, it closed its doors. The Cache County School Board decided to combine smaller schools. This helped them offer more classes and save money. Starting in the fall of 1969, all school-age children from Benson traveled by bus to other schools. Younger students (Kindergarten to sixth grade) went to Summit Elementary in Smithfield. Older students went to Richmond North Cache Junior High and Sky View High School in Smithfield.
