Bergen Point is a piece of land that sticks out into the water, like a small peninsula. It gives its name to a nearby neighborhood in Bayonne, which is in Hudson County, New Jersey. This area is on the north side of the Kill van Kull waterway, close to Newark Bay. It's the part of Bayonne that is closest to the big Bayonne Bridge.

What is the History of Bergen Point?

Early Days and Travel

People have been traveling through Bergen Point for a long time. As far back as the late 1600s, there was a ferry connecting this area to Staten Island. Later, it became a popular spot for vacations and resorts.

In the late 1700s, Bergen Point became even more important. It was a key ferry stop for people traveling between New York City and Philadelphia. A map from 1837 even called it "Vanhorn Point," named after a Dutch family who lived nearby.

Lighthouses and Roads

In 1849, the Bergen Point Lighthouse was built offshore to help ships navigate. This lighthouse was later replaced with a modern tower in the mid-1900s.

To make travel easier, a special road called the Jersey City and Bergen Point Plank Road was approved in 1851. This road helped connect Bergen Point to other areas.

Modern Transportation

In 2006, New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine announced plans to extend the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail system. This light rail is like a modern streetcar. The extension to the Eighth Street station in Bergen Point was finished and opened in January 2011.

New Developments and Studios

A large part of Bergen Point used to be a big factory for Texaco. This area has been cleared and is now being turned into new homes and fun places along Newark Bay and Kill Van Kull. Other old factory sites are also being redeveloped for different uses.

In 2022, exciting news came out about a huge new film studio being built here. It's called 1888 Studios and will be the largest studio in all of New Jersey!

The updated Collins Park and walking paths along the new developments are part of the Hackensack RiverWalk. This is a network of trails along the Hackensack River.
