Berks is a small, quiet place in Nebraska, United States. It's known as an unincorporated community. This means it's a settled area that doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Instead, it's governed by the larger Lancaster and Saline counties.

Berks is located about 3 miles (4.8 km) northeast of a town called Crete. You can find it near the BNSF Railroad Line and north of Nebraska Highway 33.

The Story of Berks

How Berks Got Its Name

The name "Berks" has a couple of interesting stories behind it. Some people think it was named after an early person who settled there. Others believe it got its name from Berks County in Pennsylvania.

There's also a cool theory about how the name was chosen. It might have been picked to fit an alphabetical pattern along the new Burlington & Quincy Railroad line. This train line was heading west from Lincoln. The stops were planned to go in order: Berks, Crete, Dorchester, Exeter, Fairmont, Grafton, and so on.

The Post Office Closes

For a while, Berks had its own post office. This was a place where people could send and receive mail. However, the Berks post office was closed down in 1912.
