Bernard Dietz (born March 22, 1948) is a famous German former football player and coach. He was a strong defender on the field. He is best known for being the captain of the West Germany national team when they won the UEFA European Championship in 1980.

Playing for Clubs

Bernard Dietz was a fantastic defender during his football career. He played in 495 matches in Germany's top league, the Bundesliga. He played for two main clubs: MSV Duisburg and FC Schalke 04.

Time at MSV Duisburg

Dietz spent most of his playing career with MSV Duisburg, from 1970 to 1982. He scored 70 goals for them in the Bundesliga. This is a lot for a defender! He is still the second-highest goal-scorer for MSV Duisburg in the top league.

In 1975, he helped Duisburg reach the final of the German Cup. This was a big achievement for the club. In 1978–79, he was the captain when MSV Duisburg made it to the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup.

A cool fact about Dietz is that he was rarely booked by referees. In over 500 games, he only received 11 yellow cards and no red cards! On November 5, 1977, he even scored four goals in one game against Bayern Munich, which Duisburg won 6–3.

To show their respect, the fans of MSV Duisburg named their zebra mascot "Ennatz." This is Bernard Dietz's nickname!

Moving to Schalke 04

In 1982, Dietz moved to FC Schalke 04. He played 135 matches for them, scoring 8 goals. In his first season, Schalke 04 was relegated to the 2. Bundesliga, the second division. Dietz played 34 games there before helping them get promoted back to the Bundesliga.

Playing for His Country

West Germany National Team

Bernard Dietz first played for the West Germany national team on December 22, 1974. This was a qualifying match for the Euro 1976 against Malta.

He played a total of 53 games for his country. He also took part in the Euro 1976 tournament and the 1978 FIFA World Cup.

Euro 1980 Champions

His biggest moment with the national team came in 1980. Bernard Dietz was the captain of the West German team that won the UEFA European Championship in Italy. Lifting that trophy as captain was a huge honor! His last game for West Germany was on May 19, 1981, against Brazil.

Life as a Coach

After he stopped playing, Bernard Dietz became a football coach. He coached both professional and amateur teams.

Early Coaching Roles

He was the head coach of ASC Schöppingen from 1987 to 1992. After that, he managed SC Verl from 1992 to 1994.

Coaching VfL Bochum

Dietz then joined VfL Bochum. He coached their reserve team, VfL Bochum II, from 1994 to 2001. He also had two short periods as the interim (temporary) head coach for the main VfL Bochum team.

In late 1999, he stepped in as caretaker coach. Under his guidance, Bochum won five league matches. He returned to coach the main team again in 2001, but he resigned later that year.

Later Coaching Roles

In 2002, Dietz went back to his old club, MSV Duisburg, to coach their reserve team, MSV Duisburg II. He also had a brief time as interim head coach for the main Duisburg team in 2002.

His last coaching job was with LR Ahlen in the third division, starting in 2006. He resigned from this position in October 2006.
