Bernard Dietz, born on March 22, 1948, is a famous German former football player and manager. He was a strong defender and even captained the West Germany national team. He led them to win the UEFA Euro 1980 tournament, which was a big achievement!

Playing for Football Clubs
Bernard Dietz was a professional defender. He played in 495 Bundesliga matches, which is Germany's top football league. He played for two main clubs: MSV Duisburg and FC Schalke 04.
Time at MSV Duisburg
Dietz spent many years with MSV Duisburg, from 1970 to 1982. During his time there, he scored 70 goals. This is a lot for a defender! He is still the second-highest goal-scorer for MSV Duisburg in the top league. He also holds the record for being the top-scoring defender in Bundesliga history across all clubs.
In 1975, he helped MSV Duisburg reach the final of the German Cup. This was a big moment in his club career. On November 5, 1977, he scored four goals in one game against Bayern Munich, which was amazing! In the 1978–79 season, he was the captain of MSV Duisburg when they made it to the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup.
Fans of MSV Duisburg really loved Bernard Dietz. They even named their club mascot, a zebra, Ennatz. This is because Ennatz is Dietz's nickname!
Moving to Schalke 04
In 1982, Dietz moved to Schalke 04. In his first season, the club was relegated to the 2. Bundesliga, which is the second division. He played 34 games for them in that league, scoring one goal. He played for Schalke 04 until 1987.
Fair Play on the Field
Even though he played in over 500 games, Bernard Dietz was known for being a very fair player. He only received 11 yellow cards and never got a red card! This shows he played with great sportsmanship.
Playing for His Country
Bernard Dietz also played for the West Germany national team. He made his first appearance on December 22, 1974, in a game against Malta.
Euro 1976 and 1978 World Cup
He played in the UEFA Euro 1976 tournament. He also took part in the 1978 FIFA World Cup.
Winning Euro 1980
His biggest success with the national team came in 1980. He was the captain of the West German team that won the UEFA Euro 1980 trophy! This was a huge victory for his country. His last game for West Germany was on May 19, 1981, against Brazil. In total, he played 53 games for his country.
Life as a Coach
After he stopped playing, Bernard Dietz became a football coach. He coached both professional and amateur teams.
Early Coaching Roles
He was the head coach of ASC Schöppingen from 1987 to 1992. Then, he managed SC Verl from 1992 to 1994. After that, he coached VfL Bochum II, which is the reserve team for VfL Bochum, from 1994 to 2001.
Coaching VfL Bochum's Main Team
In 1999, he briefly became the interim head coach for VfL Bochum's main team. He did a good job, with his team winning five league matches. He then returned to coaching Bochum's youth teams. In 2001, he took charge of VfL Bochum's first team again, but he resigned later that year.
Return to MSV Duisburg
In 2002, Dietz went back to his old club, MSV Duisburg, to coach their reserve team. He also had a short time as interim head coach for Duisburg's main team. He did well in this role, winning five out of seven matches.
Later Coaching Career
In 2006, he decided to coach LR Ahlen in the third division. His first match was a 3–0 win. However, he resigned from this position later that year.
