Berrian was a small, unnamed community in Benton County, Washington. It was located on the north bank of the Columbia River. This area is about nine miles east of Umatilla, Oregon.
What Was Berrian?
Berrian was known as an unincorporated community. This means it was a place where people lived, but it did not have its own local government. Instead, it was part of Benton County.
How Berrian Started
The community was named after Augustus F. Berrian. He was one of the first people to settle in this area. Augustus Berrian arrived in 1884.
Official Beginnings
In February 1913, a company called the Commercial Orchard Land Company officially planned the community. This process is called "platting." It means they drew up maps showing where streets and lots would be. Berrian also had its own post office. It opened on April 25, 1913. The post office served the community for many years. It finally closed on April 30, 1949.
