History of Bertha
Bertha was officially planned and mapped out in 1891. It was named after Bertha Ristau. She was an early settler and the wife of John Ristau. John Ristau started the town's first Post Office in his log cabin store in 1880. Bertha became an official city in July 1897.
In the mid-1920s, Bertha had a semi-professional baseball team. They were called the Bertha Fishermen. Famous players like Elmer Brandell and John Donaldson played for them in 1925. John Donaldson even threw a "no-hitter" game in Bertha on May 30, 1924. He struck out 20 batters in that game.
