Berthelot Lake is a freshwater lake found in the Berthelot Township, near Senneterre in Quebec, Canada. It's located in the La Vallée-de-l'Or Regional County Municipality (RCM), which is part of the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region.
The main activity in the area around the lake is forestry, which means managing and harvesting trees. The lake's surface usually freezes over from early December until the end of April.
Getting to the Berthelot Lake area can be a bit tricky because there isn't a main forest road nearby. Only one road, R0808, passes far to the north, south of Maserès Lake. Another smaller road helps people get to the southern part of the area, between the Mégiscane River and the Canadian National Railway line.
Geography
Berthelot Lake is about 7.3 kilometres (4.5 mi) long. It has many islands, forming what looks like an archipelago. The biggest island is about 3.9 kilometres (2.4 mi) long. A piece of land, called a peninsula, stretches 2.6 kilometres (1.6 mi) into the lake from the north shore. This peninsula is located between where the Macho River enters the lake and the Mégiscane River.
The lake gets its water from several rivers:
- The Mégiscane River flows into the lake from the northeast.
- The Macho River flows into the lake from the north.
- The Berthelot River (Mégiscane River) flows into the lake from the south.
The water from Berthelot Lake flows out from a bay on its southwestern side. This outflow point is located:
- About 7.8 kilometres (4.8 mi) northeast of where the Achepabanca River meets the Mégiscane River.
- About 82.8 kilometres (51.4 mi) northeast of the center of Senneterre.
- About 72.9 kilometres (45.3 mi) northeast of where the Mégiscane River flows into Parent Lake (Abitibi).
- About 32.3 kilometres (20.1 mi) north of the Canadian National Railway line, near the Gagnon-Siding stop.
The main areas that drain water into or near Berthelot Lake are:
- To the north: The Macho River and Maricourt Lake.
- To the east: Mégiscane Lake, Whitegoose River, and the Mégiscane River.
- To the south: The Berthelot River and Whitegoose River.
- To the west: The Achepabanca River and the Mégiscane River.
Toponymy
In the past, Berthelot Lake was known as "lake of the islands" because it has so many islands. The name "Berthelot" comes from a French family name.
The official name "lac Berthelot" was made formal on December 5, 1968. This was done by the Commission de toponymie du Québec, which is the official organization in Quebec responsible for naming places.
