Bertrand Township was officially started in 1836. It was named after an important early settler in the area, Joseph Bertrand.

Discover Dayton

Dayton is a small community within the western part of Bertrand Township. It's located near Dayton Lake, close to U.S. Highway 12. This area is about halfway between the towns of Niles and Three Oaks. It's also just a few miles north of the Indiana state border.

Dayton was founded in 1830 by Benjamin Redding. The area was once known by different names, like "Terré Coupe" or "Terra Coupée." When the Michigan Central Railroad was built through here in 1848, its station was also called Terre Coupe. The name was later changed to Dayton, inspired by Dayton, Ohio, where many of the first settlers came from.
