Geography
Berwang is a village built on a hillside. This hill connects two valleys: the Berwanger valley and the Rotlechtal. You can reach the Berwanger valley from a nearby town called Bichlbach.
Some of Berwang's smaller villages are in these valleys. For example, Kleinstockach and Bichlbächle are mountain villages in the Berwanger valley. Brand, Mitteregg, and Rinnen are located in the Rotlechtal.

History of Berwang
The name "Berwang" comes from two old words. "Ber" means "bears," and "wang" means "meadow." So, Berwang means "bear meadow."
The area was first settled by people from Imst. In 1266, Berwang became part of Tyrol. For a long time, it was managed by a local court in Reutte.
A big change happened in 1949. That's when the first ski lift opened in Berwang. Before this, many people in Berwang were farmers and the community was not very wealthy. But with the start of tourism, things changed a lot. Many farms closed, and the town grew into a popular place for visitors.
Mayor
The Mayor of Berwang is Dietmar Berktold. He has been the mayor since 2004. He is part of the ÖVP political party.
Coat of Arms
Berwang has its own special symbol called a coat of arms. It was given to the town in 1955. The coat of arms shows a black bear standing up on a green and silver background. This design is a "talking emblem" because it shows what the town's name means: "bear meadow."
What to See and Do
Berwang has several interesting places to visit:
- The Catholic parish church Berwang is dedicated to Saint James the Elder. It was first built around the year 1430.
- The Pension Bergheim in Berwang is a guesthouse. It was designed by architect Siegfried Mazagg in 1932. It has been beautifully restored since 2015.
- There is a village fountain in Berwang that was built in 1988/89.
- You can also find smaller churches in the villages of Bichlbächle (from the 18th century) and Kleinstockach (from the 19th century).
