History of Bethany
In 1889, a school called Nebraska Christian University was started. It was built east of another town called University Place. University Place was also near Lincoln and had its own college.
How Bethany Heights Started
The area around Nebraska Christian University became a town in 1890. It was named Bethany Heights. The college also changed its name to Cotner College. The town got its name from a famous village in the Bible called Bethany, which is in Palestine.
Why Bethany Joined Lincoln
Bethany Heights didn't grow as much as other towns near Lincoln. In 1920, about 1,078 people lived there. Other nearby towns like University Place and College View had many more residents. Havelock, another town close by, also had more people.
People in Bethany Heights often went to Lincoln for important services. This included things like hospitals, doctors, and even places to buy clothes. Because they relied so much on Lincoln, the people of Bethany Heights decided to join Lincoln. They voted to become part of the city in 1922. This process is called being "annexed." It means one town officially becomes part of a larger city.
However, Bethany didn't officially join Lincoln until 1926. This was because its neighbor, University Place, had to join Lincoln first. This made sure that Lincoln's city limits connected properly.
What Remains Today
Today, not much is left of the original town of Bethany Heights. This is different from other old towns near Lincoln, like Havelock or College View.
Cotner College was torn down in the early 1950s. The land where it stood was then used to build houses. One of the few old buildings still standing from the original town is the First State Bank of Bethany Heights. It's a reminder of the town's past.
