The Chapel's Story
How Bethlehem Chapel Began
Bethlehem Chapel was built by a man named John Chapman. He was a market gardener, which means he grew and sold plants and vegetables in Petersham. The money to build the chapel came from many people who gave small amounts, a bit like modern-day crowdfunding.
A "Huntington Chapel"
This chapel is known as a "Huntington Chapel." It was officially opened by a famous preacher named William Huntington. He was a Calvinist preacher who helped start or open many chapels across England. Many of these chapels are still standing today.
A Voice for Change
In 1846, a group from Bethlehem Chapel, led by Thomas William Dawson, spoke up in the House of Lords. They supported a new law called the Charitable Trusts Bill. This law aimed to help manage money and property given to charities, including churches, more fairly.
