Bettws (which is Betws in Welsh) is a big, modern neighborhood in the city of Newport, located in South Wales. It is also known as an electoral ward, which is a special area used for local elections.

What's in a Name?
The name Bettws comes from an old Middle English word, bedhus. This word meant "prayer house". It later changed into betws in the Welsh language.
Building Bettws
Bettws was built in the 1960s. Most of the houses in the area look very similar. A fun fact is that all the roads in Bettws are named after rivers!
Most of the homes in Bettws are privately owned. However, many are also rented from the local council or housing groups.
The Old Church
The neighborhood was built around a very old church. This church is called St David's Church. It was built way back in the 1600s. The church is probably why the area is called Bettws, as it means "prayer house".
St David's Church is a special building. It is listed as a Grade II building, which means it is historically important. A famous person named John Frost might have gotten married there. He was a leader of the Chartist movement. This movement worked to get more people the right to vote in the 1830s.

Bettws is located near several other areas. To the east, you'll find Malpas. The city border with Torfaen is to the north. Rogerstone is to the west. To the south, you'll find the M4 motorway and Allt-yr-yn.

There is a rugby union team called Bettws RFC. They play in the WRU Division Five East. There is also a football team, Malpas Civil Service F.C. They play in the Gwent County Football League. Malpas Cricket Club is also located in Bettws.
