Malpas is a community and an electoral area (called a ward) in the city of Newport, South Wales. The local government, Newport City Council, looks after the area.

Where is Malpas?

Malpas is located in Newport. It has clear boundaries:

  • To the east, it's bordered by the A4042 Heidenheim Drive.
  • The city boundary is to the north.
  • Malpas brook runs along its western side.
  • To the south, its borders include Bettws Lane, Llanover Close, and parts of Graig Wood, Yewberry Lane, and Grove Park Drive.

What Does "Malpas" Mean?

The name "Malpas" comes from the French words Mal (meaning bad or poor) and Pas (meaning passage or way). So, it basically means "bad passage" or "difficult way." In the past, people sometimes used "Le Malpas" or even the Welsh "Y Malpas."

Life in the Malpas Community

Malpas has two main housing areas. These are on either side of the main Malpas Road (A4051).

Housing Estates

  • To the west, you'll find Hollybush and the estates of Westfield and Malpas Court. Many of these houses were once owned by the council but are now privately owned.
  • To the east are privately owned estates like Woodlands, Malpas Park, Pilton Vale, and Claremont.

The roads in Malpas Court are named after famous inventors and scientists. In Malpas Park, the roads are named after different types of trees. The roads in Woodlands are named after generals from World War II, such as Allenbrooke Avenue and Montgomery Road. Claremont and Pilton Vale are single streets with many houses.

Community Support and Services

The Malpas Institute Trust is a charity. It was started with money from selling the World War I Memorial Institute. This trust helps the community.

There are four primary schools in Malpas:

  • Malpas Church in Wales Primary
  • Malpas Court
  • Malpas Park

Malpas has three Christian churches:

Another church, Christchurch, is just outside Malpas in the Shaftesbury Ward.

Malpas is also home to St Joseph's Hospital, Newport. This is one of Wales's largest private hospitals. There is also St Anne's Hospice, which helps people who need special care. Both were first run by the Sisters of St. Joseph. Now, St David's Foundation Hospice Care runs the hospice, and a group of business people and doctors took over the hospital in 2014.

You can also find a detachment of the Gwent & Powys Army Cadet Force near Oliphant Circle. The South Wales Fire and Rescue Service has a station in Malpas too.

Getting Around Malpas

There is a special path for bikes and walkers next to the River Usk. This path connects Malpas to Caerleon and the Newport city centre at Crindau. It's a great way to explore the area!
