Discovering Beveridge's Past

How Beveridge Got Its Name

Beveridge was named after Andrew Beveridge. He was a sheep farmer from Scotland. In 1845, he built a place called the Hunters' Tryste Inn. This old inn is still used today. It works as a hotel, a post office, and a general store.

The Story of Ned Kelly's Childhood Home

Beveridge is famous as the birthplace of bushranger Ned Kelly. He lived here when he was a small boy. His exact birth date is not known. However, he was likely born at his grandfather James Quinn's farm.

A cottage where the Kelly family lived for a short time is still standing. You can find it on Kelly Street. Records show that John Kelly built this house around 1859. At that time, Ned was about five years old. Ned's younger siblings, Dan Kelly and Kate Kelly, were also born in this house.

The local primary school is a bluestone building. It was once a church where the Kelly family prayed. This gothic-style building sits on a hillside. It was built between 1857 and 1862. Later, a sacristy and chancel were added in 1877.

Exploring Mount Fraser

Near Beveridge, you will find Mount Fraser. This is an extinct volcanic cone. It last erupted about one million years ago. Mount Fraser rises about 120 meters (394 feet) above the land around it.

From this spot, explorers Hume and Hovell first saw Port Phillip Bay. This important sighting happened on December 14, 1824. Today, a quarry operates on the side of the hill.
