Bayaaswaa was an important leader, known as the principal Chief, of the Sandy Lake Ojibwa people. His village was located in Minnesota, near Sandy Lake and the Savanna Portage. People also knew him by names like Biauswah or Biaswah.

Early Life and Challenges
A Brave Father's Sacrifice
Stories passed down through generations, called oral histories, tell us about Bayaaswaa's early life. When he was a child, the Fox people captured him. His father, who was also named Bayaaswaa, bravely traded his own life to save his son.
After this event, Bayaaswaa and a few other survivors traveled to Fond du Lac. The Fond du Lac Band then helped to push the Fox people out of northern Wisconsin.
Important Battles and Leadership
Defending Sandy Lake
Oral histories also describe a major battle between the Ojibwa and the Dakota people. This fight happened near the Crow Wing River. About sixty Ojibwa warriors, led by Bayaaswaa, faced three hundred Dakota warriors. The Dakota were said to have destroyed the Ojibwa village at Sandy Lake.
This battle supposedly lasted for three days. After the conflict, the Ojibwa established their village at Sandy Lake, forming the Sandy Lake Band. They later traveled to Red Lake and Pembina. Other stories suggest that the Cree people also helped the Ojibwa in their fight against the Dakota.
A Wise Leader
Bayaaswaa was known as a jiisakiiwinini, which means a Shaking-tent Seer. This was a spiritual role among his people. He lived to be very old, reaching the age of 109.
Family and Legacy
Passing on Leadership
Bayaaswaa's son, whose name was Gaa-dawaabide (meaning "Broken Tooth"), later became the Chief of the Sandy Lake Band. This shows how leadership was passed down through families in the Ojibwa community.
Places Named After Bayaaswaa
Bayaaswaa's legacy lives on in several places named after him.
- Biauswah Lake in Itasca County, Minnesota, is named in his honor.
- The Biauswah Bridge also carries his name. This bridge is part of Minnesota State Highway 23 and crosses the Saint Louis River. It is located near the Fond du Lac neighborhood in Duluth, Minnesota.
