Bible of Borso d'Este facts for kids
The Bible of Borso d'Este is a very famous and beautiful illuminated Latin Bible. It was made during the Renaissance period in Europe. This special Bible was created between 1455 and 1461 for Borso d'Este, who was the Duke of Ferrara.
This amazing book has more than 600 pages. It also contains over 1000 small paintings! These tiny artworks show many things. You can see pictures of plants and animals. There are also scenes from daily life in the 1400s, including people playing music and dancing.
How It Looks
Northern Italy had a long tradition of making miniature paintings. These were very small, detailed artworks. The French Bible of Niccolò III was painted in this style. It was a model for the artists who created Borso's Bible. Niccolò's Bible was finished in 1434. Today, it is kept in the Vatican.
Its Journey Through Time
The Bible of Borso d'Este was created by a team of artists. This happened between 1455 and 1461. Taddeo Crivelli and Franco dei Russi were the main leaders of this art group. Other artists who helped were Girolamo da Cremona, Marco dell’Avogadro, and Giorgio d’Alemagna. Pietro Paolo Marone, a scribe from Bologna, did all the writing in the book.
In 1598, the Estense family had to move from Ferrara to Modena. This happened after the Pope took control of Ferrara. They took their precious Bible with them to Modena. Later, in 1859, the city of Modena became part of Italy. At that time, Francesco V d’Austria-Este moved to Vienna and took the Bible with him.
But the Bible eventually came back to Italy! In 1923, a man named Giovanni Treccani degli Alfieri bought the Bible. He found it in a bookstore in Paris. He then returned the Bible to the Biblioteca Estense in Modena, Italy.
Today, the Bible of Borso d'Este is kept in the Biblioteca Estense (Este Library). This library is inside the Palazzo dei Musei. The Palazzo dei Musei is a museum and art gallery. The building was first built between 1767 and 1771 as a place for poor people. In 1788, it became an art gallery. The government took over the building in 1883. The Bible of Borso d'Este is one of the most famous books in this museum.
