Big M is a popular brand of flavoured milk from Victoria, Australia. It started in 1977 and was officially launched in 1978. The Victorian Dairy Industry Authority (VDIA) created Big M. This group helped bring new and exciting dairy products to people. In November 2020, an Australian company called Bega Cheese bought Big M. They also bought other well-known brands from a Japanese company called Kirin Holdings.

The Story of Big M Milk
How Big M Started
Before Big M, many small dairies sold plain milk. There wasn't much new or exciting in the milk world. The Victorian Dairy Industry Authority (VDIA) wanted to change this. They aimed to create new, branded milk products. Peter Granger, a marketing manager, came up with the idea for Big M. He also thought of another product called Rev, which was a reduced-fat milk.
Making Milk Exciting
At first, some people in the dairy industry were unsure about Big M. They weren't used to new ideas or big advertising campaigns. But the VDIA worked hard to make it happen. They hired an advertising agency named George Paterson. This agency created the famous Big M surfing ads. These ads were very successful and made people want to try Big M. It was special because a government group launched such a popular product.
Where You Can Find Big M
Big M quickly became a favourite. It was especially popular because of its connection to surf and beach culture. You can find Big M in Melbourne and other parts of Victoria. It's also sold in southern New South Wales. In recent years, Big M has become available in more areas. You can now find it further north in New South Wales and even in Queensland. Big M comes in different types of containers. These include cartons, Tetra Briks, and plastic bottles. You can buy it as fresh milk or as UHT milk. There's also a low-fat chocolate version available.

In 2010, Big M had a special "Flavour Flashback" event. People voted for their favourite old flavour to bring back. The winner was Big Egg Flip. It was available for a while, then retired. Honeycomb and Choc Berry were also brought back as limited editions. Egg Flip has returned several times since then. Blue Heaven has also made a comeback as a limited flavour. In 2021, Blue Heaven even sold more than the popular Strawberry flavour!
