History of Big Piney
Big Piney is the oldest town in Sublette County. It was started in 1879. A rancher named Daniel B. Budd and his partner Hugh McKay came to the area. They brought a thousand cattle from Nevada. They got stuck in a bad winter storm in the Green River Valley. The next year, Dan Budd moved his family to this spot, which became Big Piney.
The town got its name from Big Piney Creek. The creek was named for the many pine trees growing along its banks. For a long time, the main jobs in the area have been cattle ranching and oil production.
Wardell Buffalo Trap
Near Big Piney is the Wardell Buffalo Trap. This is a canyon that Native Americans used to trap bison (buffalo). It is a very important historical site. Because of its value, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971.
