Bijay Mohanty (born April 8, 1950 – died July 20, 2020) was a famous Indian actor. He was well-known for his work in Odia Cinema, which are films made in the Odia language. He even received a special National Film Award for his amazing acting!

About His Life
Growing Up
Bijay Mohanty was born in a place called Pandiri in Kendrapara, Odisha, India. He grew up in Baripada, Mayurbhanj. He loved acting from a young age, even when he was still in school at M.K.C High School.
After finishing college, he joined the National School of Drama (NSD). This is a very famous school in India where people learn to become actors. He studied there with other actors who later became very famous, like Naseeruddin Shah and Om Puri. After finishing NSD in 1975, he worked in plays in Delhi. Later, he moved back to Odisha and started directing plays.
Family Life
Bijay Mohanty was married to Tandra Ray, who was also a well-known actress in the Odia film industry. They even acted together in many movies! They had one daughter.
His Acting Career
Bijay Mohanty started his film career in 1977 with a movie called Chilika Tire. This movie was so good that it won a National Award!
At first, he often played bad guys, also known as villains, in movies. Some of his famous villain roles were in films like Naga Phasa, Samay Bada Balaban, and Chaka Akhi Sabu Dekhuchi. But he was a very talented actor and could play all kinds of roles. He played heroes, villains, funny characters (comedians), and other important roles. He was excellent in every role he took on!
Some of his other popular movies include Arati (1981), Mamata Mage Mula (1985), Aei Aama Sansara (1986), and I Love My India (2006). He even directed a movie himself called Bhuli Huena.
Besides acting, Bijay Mohanty also taught acting. In 1977, he joined the Drama department at the Utkal Sangeet Mahavidyalaya, which is a music and arts college. He worked there as a professor for many years before he retired.
He also started a drama group called Jugechha in his hometown of Baripada. This group was very popular and performed plays all over Odisha and other parts of India.
You might have also seen him in TV shows! He acted in many television serials that were shown on Doordarshan, like Asara Aloka, Sri Jagannath, and Samaya Chaka.
A Short Time in Politics
Bijay Mohanty also tried his hand at politics for a short time. In 2014, he joined a political party called the Indian National Congress. He ran for election to become a member of Parliament from the Bhubaneswar area. However, he did not win the election. After that, he decided to leave politics because he wasn't actively involved anymore.
His Passing
Bijay Mohanty passed away on July 20, 2020, at the age of 70. He was in a hospital in Bhubaneswar when he died.

Bijay Mohanty received many awards for his contributions to acting and art:
- National Film Awards (1978): He received a Certificate of Merit for his film Chilika Teerey, which was recognized as the best Odia film that year.
- Jayadev Award (2014): This is a very important award in Odisha for contributions to cinema.
- He was also honored with a National Award for his overall work in art and literature.
