William Pond Baker, born on June 14, 1940, is an American businessman and politician. He served as a United States Congressman for California. He was a representative for two terms, from 1993 to 1997.

Who is Bill Baker?
Early Life and Career
Bill Baker was born in Oakland, California. He grew up and later attended San Jose State University. There, he earned a degree in business. Before his political career, Baker served in the United States Coast Guard reserve. He was part of the reserve from 1957 to 1965.
After college, Bill Baker started his career in finance. He worked as a budget analyst for a big financial company. Later, he took a similar job with the California Department of Finance for four years. Baker also worked as the vice president of a Taxpayers Association.
In 1980, he successfully ran for a seat in the California State Assembly. He was a member of the Republican Party. He served six terms in the State Assembly. His district included parts of Contra Costa and Alameda Counties.
Serving in Congress
In 1992, Bill Baker decided to run for Congress. He won the election and served two terms in the United States House of Representatives. He was known for his conservative political views. In 1996, he ran for re-election but lost to Ellen Tauscher.
After His Time in Congress
After leaving Congress in 1997, Baker returned to the world of finance. He became a partner in an investment management firm called Baker, Brose & Mitsutome.
