William Pond Baker (born June 14, 1940) is an American businessman and politician. He served as a United States Congressman for California for two terms, from 1993 to 1997.

Bill Baker's Early Life and Career

William Baker went to San Jose State University. There, he earned a degree in business. Before his political career, he served in the United States Coast Guard reserve. He was part of the Coast Guard from 1957 to 1965.

After college, Baker started his career in finance. He worked as a budget analyst for a big financial company. Later, he took a similar job with the California Department of Finance. He worked there for four years. Before becoming a politician, Baker was also the vice president of a Taxpayers Association.

Becoming a Politician

In 1980, Bill Baker decided to run for office. He successfully won a seat in the California State Assembly. He ran as a member of the Republican Party. He served six terms in the State Assembly. His district included parts of Contra Costa and Alameda Counties.

Serving in Congress

In 1992, Baker ran for the U.S. Congress. He won and served two terms in the House. He was known for his conservative political views. In 1996, he ran for re-election but lost to Ellen Tauscher.

After His Time in Congress

After leaving Congress, Bill Baker went back to working in finance. He became a partner in an investment management company called Baker, Brose & Mitsutome.
