Exploring Birchwood Village's Geography
Birchwood Village covers a total area of about 0.34 square miles (0.89 square kilometers). Almost all of this area is land. A main road, Cedar Street / Hall Avenue, runs through the city. The village is located on the south and east shores of White Bear Lake, a popular spot for recreation.
The History of Birchwood Village
Birchwood Village started as a place for summer vacations. In the early 1900s, people from nearby Saint Paul built small cottages here. They came to enjoy the lake and the outdoors.
From Cottages to Homes
The first homes were built close to the lake. Today, this area has a mix of old houses that have been updated. You can also see new homes built where older ones once stood. Areas further from the lake have newer houses. These homes are more similar in style. However, they still keep the village's natural feel. This is because they have preserved the trees and other natural features.
Transportation and Growth
Long ago, a streetcar system called Twin City Lines served the community. It traveled through Birchwood Village on its way to other towns. The way people traveled changed over time. This change affected how the land was divided. Older areas, served by the streetcar, often have smaller lots. Newer areas, built after cars became common, tend to have larger lots.
Becoming a City
Birchwood was first officially recognized as a "village" in 1921. Later, the state government changed its status. It became a "City of the Fourth Class." However, the people living there loved the name "village." So, they added it back. Now, it is officially called "Birchwood Village, a City of the Fourth Class."
