History
Bird Island was first planned out in 1878. It got its name from a nearby area that was once a home for many birds. This bird area was a marsh, which is a type of wetland.
Later, people added ditches and pipes to drain the water from the marsh. This changed the land into farmland. Because of this, the bird sanctuary that the town was named after disappeared.
A post office opened in Bird Island in 1878. The town officially became a city in 1881.
