The bizcochito or biscochito is a special cookie from New Mexico. It's a crispy cookie made with butter or lard. It gets its yummy flavor from sugar, cinnamon, and a spice called anise.

The cookie dough is rolled out thin. Then, it's cut into fun shapes. These can be a fleur-de-lis (a fancy flower symbol), a cross, a star, or a circle. The circle shape often represents the moon.

This cookie was first made in New Mexico many centuries ago. It was created by the first Spanish people who settled there. At that time, the area was known as Santa Fe de Nuevo México.

Bizcochitos are often served during happy events. You might see them at wedding receptions or baptisms. They are also very popular during religious holidays, especially Christmas. People often enjoy them with a cup of coffee.

New Mexico's Official Cookie

In 1989, the state of New Mexico made the bizcochito its official state cookie. This was a big deal! New Mexico was the very first U.S. state to have an official state cookie.

The state chose the bizcochito to help keep old traditions alive. They wanted to celebrate home-baked recipes. Today, New Mexico is still one of only two states with an official state cookie. The other state is Massachusetts, which has the chocolate-chip cookie.
