Björn Engholm (born 9 November 1939) is a German politician. He was a leader in the Social Democratic Party (SPD). He held important roles in the German government.
From 1981 to 1982, he was the Federal Minister for Education and Science. In 1982, he also served as the Federal Minister for Food, Agriculture and Forests. Later, from 1988 to 1993, he was the Minister-President of Schleswig-Holstein. He also led the Social Democratic Party from 1991 to 1993.

Early Life and Education
Björn Engholm was born on November 9, 1939. His birthplace was Lübeck-Moisling, which is in Germany. He went to the University of Hamburg for his education.
Political Career
Engholm joined the Social Democratic Party (SPD) in 1962. He became a member of the Bundestag, which is the German parliament, in 1969. He represented the city of Lübeck.
Roles in Government
Björn Engholm held several key positions. He was a Parliamentary State Secretary in the Ministry of Education and Science. This role helps a minister with their duties. Later, he became a full minister.
- Minister for Education and Science: From 1981 to 1982, he was in charge of education and science for the whole country.
- Minister for Food, Agriculture and Forests: In 1982, he also took on this role, looking after farming and forests.
Leading Schleswig-Holstein
In 1988, Engholm was elected Minister-President of Schleswig-Holstein. This is like being the governor of a German state. His party, the SPD, won a lot of votes, getting over 54%. This was the first time they had a clear majority in that state.
During his time as Minister-President, he also served as the President of the Bundesrat. The Bundesrat is another important part of the German government. He held this position from 1988 to 1989.
Party Leadership
From 1991 to 1993, Björn Engholm was the leader of the Social Democratic Party. This made him a very important figure in German politics.
Later Life
Björn Engholm stepped down from his political roles in 1993. Rudolf Scharping took over as the party chairman. Heide Simonis became the new Minister-President of Schleswig-Holstein.
Since 1964, Engholm has been married to Barbara Engholm. She is a painter. They have two daughters together.
