Björn Engholm's Early Life and Education
Björn Engholm was born in Lübeck-Moisling, Germany. He studied at the University of Hamburg. His education helped prepare him for a career in public service.
Becoming Minister-President
In 1988, Engholm was chosen as the Minister-President of Schleswig-Holstein. This happened after a political event known as the "Barschel affair." During this time, he was unfairly targeted with false accusations. Despite this, the Social Democrats won a lot of votes. They gained an absolute majority for the first time ever in Schleswig-Holstein.
From 1988 to 1989, Engholm also served as the President of the Bundesrat. The Bundesrat is like a second parliament in Germany, representing the states.
A Difficult Decision
Even though Björn Engholm was popular, he had to step down in 1993. This was due to issues that came up during the "Barschel affair" investigation. There were questions about how some information was handled. This led to his resignation as both party leader and Minister-President.
After his resignation, Rudolf Scharping took over as the party chairman. Heide Simonis became the new Minister-President of Schleswig-Holstein.
