Helmut Rohde (born 9 November 1925 – died 16 April 2016) was an important German politician. He served as the Federal Minister of Education and Science for Germany. This means he was in charge of schools and research for the country. He held this job from 1974 to 1978.

Early Life and Education
Helmut Rohde was born in Hanover, Germany, on 9 November 1925. His father, August, worked as a welder. He was also a member of a trade union and a social democrat.
During World War II, Helmut Rohde served in the German army. He was a prisoner of war for a short time until 1945. After the war, he studied journalism and finished in 1947. In 1950, he began studying politics and business. He attended a higher education school in Wilhelmshaven. This school later became part of the University of Göttingen.
Political Career and Public Service
In 1945, Rohde joined the Social Democratic Party (SPD). This is one of Germany's main political parties. After finishing his studies, he worked as an editor. He wrote for the German Press Agency in Hanover. He sometimes used the pen name Achilles.
Serving in Parliament
In the 1950s, Rohde worked for his party in Hanover. He also helped with their "working group for workers' questions." In 1957, he was elected to the Bundestag. The Bundestag is like Germany's parliament. He represented Hanover there. From 1964 to 1965, he was also a member of the European Parliament. This parliament works for countries across Europe.
Becoming a Federal Minister
On 16 May 1974, Helmut Rohde became the Federal Minister of Education and Science. He took over from Klaus von Dohnanyi. He was part of the government led by Chancellor Helmut Schmidt. In 1975, Rohde joined the SPD's main leadership team.
His time as education minister ended on 16 February 1978. Another SPD politician, Jürgen Schmude, took his place. After leaving this important job, Rohde focused on helping workers. He continued his work with the SPD's group for workers' questions.
Teaching and Later Recognition
In 1985, Rohde started teaching. He became a lecturer at Leibniz University Hannover. He also taught at the University of Bochum. In 1994, the University of Bremen honored him. They named him an honorary professor.
Later Years
Helmut Rohde spent his later years living in a nursing home. It was located near Bonn. He passed away on 16 April 2016, at the age of 90.
