Black Canyon City is a small community in Yavapai County, Arizona, United States. It is known as a census-designated place (CDP). This means it is a community that the government counts for population surveys. In 2020, about 2,677 people lived there.

Where is Black Canyon City?
Black Canyon City is located in southern Yavapai County. It is about 22 miles (35 km) north of Phoenix. The community of Rock Springs is also part of Black Canyon City.
Location and Size
The community sits at an elevation of about 1,975 feet (602 meters). The total land area of Black Canyon City is about 20 square miles (51.8 square kilometers).
Rivers and Roads
Interstate 17 is a major highway that goes right through Black Canyon City. This road is the main route between Phoenix and Flagstaff. The Agua Fria River also flows through the center of Black Canyon City. This river eventually flows into Lake Pleasant, which is to the southwest.
Growing Community
Black Canyon City is becoming a popular place for people who work in Phoenix to live. This is because Phoenix is growing quickly to the north.
A Look at Black Canyon City's Past
Black Canyon City has had a few different names over time, like Goddard or Goddards, Cañon, and Black Canyon. It was once a stop for stagecoaches traveling between Phoenix and Prescott. It also served as a supply center for mines in the nearby Bradshaw Mountains.
Early Settlers
People from Anglo-European backgrounds first settled in this area in the 1870s. The first post office opened in May 1894 and was called Cañon. An early settler was Jack Swilling and his wife Trinidad Swilling. They moved there in 1871. The old walls of their ranch house, called Swillings Cabin, are still standing today. It is the oldest building in the community.
Trying to Become a Town
In 2004, the people living in Black Canyon City thought about officially becoming a town. They gathered enough signatures to hold an election. However, most residents voted against the idea, with 72% saying no.

The population of Black Canyon City has changed over the years. In 1960, only about 100 people lived there. By 2020, the population had grown to 2,677.

Clean Water in Black Canyon City
Black Canyon City has very good water quality. The community's well water meets all federal standards for drinking water. Most homes and businesses get their water from a special water district. This district has invested a lot in systems to treat the water and make sure it is safe. The water quality is checked all the time by the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ).
Parks and Recreation
Black Canyon City has two main parks where people can enjoy nature and outdoor activities.
- Black Canyon Heritage Park: This park is about 8 acres (3.2 hectares) in size. It has an easy-to-use trail that lets you explore the riverside area. It's a great place for seeing birds and butterflies. The park's Visitor Center is run by the Black Canyon City Chamber of Commerce. It offers lots of information about the area and Arizona.
- High Desert Park: This is a much larger park, about 89 acres (36 hectares). It has picnic areas (ramadas) and a baseball field. It's a good spot for sports and family outings.
Education
Most students in Black Canyon City attend schools within the Cañon Elementary School District. Some students are in the Mayer Unified School District. High school students from the Cañon district usually go to schools in the Deer Valley Unified School District.
Public Safety
The Yavapai County Sheriff's Office is in charge of police protection in the Black Canyon City area. They help keep the community safe.
Fire Department History
The fire department started in 1969 as the "Canyon Community Volunteer Fire Department." In 1983, it became an official Fire District and changed its name to Black Canyon Fire District. In 2017, the Black Canyon Fire District joined with the Daisy Mountain Fire District.
Notable People from Black Canyon City
- Jacob Snively (1809–1871): He was a surveyor and engineer. He was also an officer in the Texian Army and a pioneer in Arizona.
- John W. "Jack" Swilling (1830–1878): He was an early pioneer in Arizona. Many people say he was one of the original founders of Phoenix, Arizona.
