Black Hill is a cool mountain located in Morro Bay, California. It's part of the beautiful Morro Bay State Park. This mountain is special because it's one of a group of nine old volcanoes called the Nine Sisters. They are actually volcanic plugs, which are like the hardened cores of ancient volcanoes.

Fleming's Forest: A Special Pine Grove

On Black Hill, you'll find a unique forest filled with Monterey Pine trees. This forest is known as Fleming's Forest. It was planted by John Fleming, who used to be the park superintendent.

How Fleming's Forest Started

John Fleming was working on another project and ordered twice as many trees as he thought he would get. To his surprise, he received all of them! So, he decided to use the extra trees to plant this forest on Black Hill.

Threats to the Monterey Pines

Sadly, many of these Monterey Pine trees are dying. They are affected by a plant disease called pine pitch canker. This is a fungal disease that harms pine trees. It also threatens other native Monterey pine forests nearby, like those in Cambria and on the Monterey Peninsula.
