Black Mountain is a cool mountain located in the state of Georgia, USA. It sits right on the border between Dawson and Gilmer counties. This mountain is special because its very top, called the summit, is the highest point in Dawson County! It's also part of the huge Chattahoochee National Forest and the Blue Ridge Wildlife Management Area, which means it's a protected area for nature and animals.
Where is Black Mountain?
Black Mountain is found in northern Georgia, right where Dawson and Gilmer counties meet. It stands about 3,600 feet (which is over 1,000 meters) tall. That's pretty high!
This mountain is close to some other interesting places:
- It's about 4 miles (6.4 km) north of Amicalola Falls State Park. This park is famous for its tall waterfall.
- It's about 14 miles (22.5 km) northwest of a town called Dahlonega.
- It's also about 17 miles (27.4 km) southwest of Ellijay.
A very important spot for hikers, Springer Mountain, is only about 1 mile (1.6 km) northeast of Black Mountain. Springer Mountain is where the famous Appalachian Trail officially begins in the south! Other cool natural spots nearby include Nimblewill Gap, Frosty Mountain, and Tickanetley Creek.
Hiking to Black Mountain
If you love hiking, you can reach Black Mountain by walking on the Appalachian Approach Trail. This trail is a path that leads to the main Appalachian Trail.
Here's how far it is from different starting points:
- From Amicalola Falls State Park, it's about a 5.5-mile (8.9 km) hike north.
- From Nimblewill Gap, it's a shorter 0.6-mile (1 km) hike north.
- If you're coming from Springer Mountain, it's about a 2.3-mile (3.7 km) hike south on the trail.
